So picture this, your legs are on fire, you can hardly catch a breath, your lungs are screaming…and your trainer says ‘Just 5 more!!’ Have you ever had murderous thoughts?? I bet you have at that time!! tee hee! Its true in order to graduate from Personal Trainer school, we do have to take an ‘evil test’ to determine if we are sadistic enough… Que the evil chuckle!!
As a personal trainer I would never prescribe my client an exercise I couldn’t do! Because thats just not the decent thing to do!! I have so many different types of clients come to see me… most are looking for weight loss, some are looking for strength, I love it when a female comes to me looking to increase their confidence, because well chicks who lift are cool right, and of course so many come to me because they simply want to live a pain free existence. Often during our chats initially and then through trial and error we work out what their favourite style of training is… often to the clients surprise, but have you ever wondered what is your trainers favourite style of workout?? Like anyone else each trainer has a different style that they prefer, some love Power Lifting, some love running, some love strength only… but for me I love a Hurricane Style of Workout.
A Hurricane workout is an intense training method that combines extreme cardio with muscle-building weight training and stretching exercise and is based on muscle confusion and fatigue, followed by rapid repair, which maximizes the time you spend working out. Each workout involves three circuits of sprints, followed by two strength-training exercises, with three sets of each circuit. Hurricane workouts should be done once or twice weekly in conjunction with your regular fitness routine. I love the hurricane workout because it drives my Heart Rate to maximum levels, includes strength training, provides me maximum effort in the time I have (as a busy working mum, my time is limited) but my absolute favourite part of it… the adrenaline rush at the end of it! Who needs drugs, the rush that comes from finishing a Hurricane Style Workout where you have given it your all!! My trainer Sam (Yes a Personal Trainer totally needs a trainer! to push, hold you accountable, and challenge you! ) introduced me to the Hurricane Workout… he pushes me far harder than I even would have gone because I have total faith in him and he keeps me safe, and since we have started training in this style I have seen huge results in both my strength as well as cardio fitness… I’m hooked! My only challenge is limiting myself to once or twice a week in this style! I often find a modified style of this training works really well with my clients when they are looking for fat loss as its so effective. So here is a Hurricane Style workout that you can try either at home or at the gym! You don’t even need to have equipment.
Exercise 1
60 Seconds Running (if treadmill at least a 10), push yourself to a high intensity here
12 Squat Jumps
12 Push Ups
2- 3 Sets
Exercise 2
60 Seconds Skipping -skip or jump at the highest intensity you can maintain for 60 seconds
12 Walking Lunges (each side) Step forward with your left foot, lower your body into a lunge, and then bring your right foot forward. Now push your body back to a standing position
12 Burpees
2- 3 Sets
Dependent on time try to get through 3 sets of each, but 2 will be effective also!
So get to know your Personal Trainer, they may have a favourite style of training themselves that you might enjoy! Give it a whirl!
